BJJ BASICS

Last month during the Carlson Gracie JR and Rey Diogo seminar we went over some basic guard passing techniques. Some people don't like the word basic when they invested a lot of time developing some kind of skill and BJJ is not different. After the seminar and in a conversation with some of the higher belts we all felt that we needed to be demoted for not knowing some of the basics that we learned that day. So instead of learning 100 advanced techniques with a 10 percent proficiency, why not learn 10 basic techniques with 100 percent proficiency. So keep working and polishing the basics and your game will improve beyond your imagination. By the way here is a quote from Lloyd Irvin:"I HATE FANCY BJJ FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVEN'TGOTTEN THE BASICS DOWN. I love watching the old Carlson Gracie guys, good old solid basics, which I personally believe transfers better into mma. That's one reason a lot of the high level sport guys that had the fancy style don't do well in mma". Be patient, train smart and always review the basics.

It is All Fun and Games

After a year of teaching BJJ on my own and experimenting with different coaching methods, I came to the conclusion that no matter what method of coaching you decide to use the most important factor is FUN. Over the past year I had the opportunity of coaching and teaching different populations, high school wrestlers, kick boxers, beginners, military personnel, the gifted, the not so gifted, adults, kids, etc... and every time that I came with or borrowed an idea that was safe and fun always received good feedback. Maybe because when you are having fun your mind is fully engaged, relaxed, open to new ideas and the ego stays outside the mat. The sparing became more like a game than a fight and you always Tap with a Smile (TWS). Your game opens and instead of playing your strong game and tapping everybody on the mat you discover the holes on your game . So next time you get on the mat have FUN and TWS.
